With the passing of Trumpcare in the House a fait accompli, many Democrats are licking their lips for a possible rout in the upcoming 2018 mid-term elections. Logic would dictate, after all, that this craven sham of a bill which would leave millions without health insurance, while gifting a hefty tax cut to the one percenters might not sit all too well with a Red State constituency rife with pre-existing conditions and Medicaid beneficiaries. Logic, however, is a commodity sorely lacking amongst the die-hard Trumpists. Time and time again, we’ve seen the lemmings fall off the cliff, clamouring gleefully to the polling booths for the pleasure of voting against their own self-interest.
Still and all, the GOP House members that signed their name on the dotted line have serious cause for concern. This is a wildly unpopular bill, one which seems abject in its cruelty, and disregard for the very folks who’ve given them their undying and ardent support. This is not an action Republican lawmakers can easily slink away from or deny. As House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi said of her ‘friends across the aisle’ moments after the bill was passed, “You have every provision of this bill tattooed on your forehead. You will glow in the dark on this one.” And it seems she may have a point. Already we’re witnessing the pitchfork and torch images of angry voters rocking their local Town Halls with shouts of disdain for the bill, and the media’s coverage – even among more conservative outlets – has been anything but positive, to be sure. And with a recent Quinnipiac poll showing only 17 percent of support for the bill, it very well could be that the GOP have committed virtual political hari kari on this one, that they’ve flubbed the play…massively cocked up… screwed the proverbial pooch!
…but then again.
If there’s one thing that should be painfully obvious to anyone paying attention, it’s that in this new paradigm or shall we say ‘Trumpadigm’ – lies counter all. It’s the GOP’s brightest hope and their potential road to victory in 2018. Let there be no doubt, they will continue to unleash their predictable barrage of lies, untruths, obfuscation and alternative facts to a receptive audience just as candidate Trump did when he repeatedly promised his frothing hoardes a ‘beautiful’ new health care system which will fix the ‘disaster’ of Obamacare – all within the first 100 days. And chances are, enough will take the bait – and switch – to secure their seats and majority for another term. The question is…how do you combat bald-faced mendacity when you’ve got an oblivious and susceptible electorate? This is something the Democrats will have to figure out – and very soon. For years, they have been woefully incompetent when it comes to connecting with on-the-fence voters. Their knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory looms large in their legend. They are seemingly unable to muster any sort of compelling counter narrative to successfully combat the GOP’s us vs the ‘other’ divisiveness. That is until now…now they’ve got the narrative: Republicans don’t care whether you live or die. Simple, pithy, and most of all – the truth. Will they take up that standard and charge or are they merely content to stand on the side lines lobbing the occasional snide remark, hoping the GOP will implode on their own? This remains to be seen. One thing’s for certain, they should never underestimate the Republican’s willingness to lie to their faithful and the willingness of those faithful to be lied to –even at the cost of their own lives.
